Lucky for you, we’ve selected 10 of the most creative DIY holiday décor ideas to make it all possible.

So without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Decorate The House For Christmas With These Last-Minute Ideas

1. Starburst Ornament

This year, complement your Christmas tree’s glamorous neon lights with sparkling silver stars made out of toothpicks. To create a silver star, push halved and whole toothpicks into a foam ball and add one or two coats of spray paint.

Before the paint dries up, dust them with fine silver glitter and let them dry. Next, attach hanging strings using a hot glue gun.

2. The Fake Fireplace

Instead of candles, fill your decorative lanterns with string lights to add a touch of coziness to your non-functional fireplace.

You can use old lanterns for this decorative project or these amazing resin log candle holders. Compared to setting up a lit fireplace, this DIY is faster and safer for the cold winter season. With the chaos that comes with the holidays, this simple hack will save your life.

3. The Shiny, Oversized Wreath

When decorating the mantel, you can go traditional with an evergreen wreath. If you’re looking to spice it up with bright colorful light, an oversized wreath punctuated with sparkling hues will definitely make an eye-popping statement!

If bold colors aren’t your thing, you can use white lights to get the same glamorous effect. Try to strike a balance with your décor such that the lit wreath shines without being too overwhelming.

4. All Wrapped Up Christmas Tree

Your tree is undeniably the star of the show when decorating for Christmas. So why not make it the focal point of your room? Whether you’re going for a traditional theme or looking to get crafty, the right presentation will help achieve that.

For a uniform ambiance, neatly arrange the gifts around the tree base and keep your wrap treatment minimal, consistent, and monochromatic.

As for the palette, you can choose the traditional red and green or go for metallics and hints of blue. Whatever color you choose, be sure to decorate the tree in the same hue to neatly tie the whole picture together.

5. Simple Wreath

The beauty of this kind of wreath is that it’s so easy and chic. Making a simple wreath is quite easy. The little tchotchkes aside, you’ll need wire, a metal hoop, and leaves.

Using wire, layer the leaves and wrap as you go. Your guests will enjoy looking at your stunning eucalyptus wreath.

6. Jingle Runner Table Decor

This runner doesn’t just look festive, it also sounds incredibly Christmassy! Plus, the “berries” are actual red jingle bells.

Better yet, it’s super easy to make. Start by cutting holly leaves from light green and dark card stock. Using a wooden skewer or a bone folder, indent the veins in the leaves and trace the resultant indents with a green coloring pencil. Next, run them down the center of the table you’re decorating and put red jingle bells throughout.

7. Vintage Tart Pan Tree

If you want to bring some vintage vibes to your Christmas season, this is the project for you.

To make this tree decoration, collect vintage tart pans of different sizes, ranging from 3-11 inches. Next, stack them up from the largest to the smallest to form a Christmas tree shape. Top the “tree” with a star-shaped baking mold and finish with a charming snow scene accent.

Edible snow globe cookies are a holiday delight for both kids and adults. As such, you can use them as decor for the kids-only table or as a party favor for an adult-only gathering!

9. The Fun Countdown

Make the countdown to Santa’s arrival more fun with a creative advent calendar. Alternatively, you could round up several containers and fill them with holiday treats. Include the usuals, such as candy, small trinkets, and other food items. Use colorful tissue paper as a topping, and label each container from 1 to 25 using number stickers.

While chocolate-filled calendars will do just fine, this stackable idea is more out-of-box. What’s more, you can reuse this creative advent calendar next year—except for the tissue paper.

(Easy) Spiked Cider Holiday Punch Recipe

It’s that spiked cider time of year! By far, one of my favorite fall / winter cocktails is spiked cider. Have you ever tried it?

A spiked cider cocktail recipe in coupe glasses with cinnamon sticks on top

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved regular (un-spiked) apple cider, but then I tried spiked cider at some holiday party years ago and I’m pretty sure I’m never going back. Haha. It tastes oh-so-good AND warms you up like nobody’s business.

So I’m sharing the recipe, in case anyone needs an easy holiday cocktail idea that can be batched, like this one.

Because this time of year, nothing warms your insides up like a strong whiskey drink, except maybe your kid(s) seeing Santa for the first time or Christmas morning when you were a kiddo…or a whole slew of other Christmas moments. BUT I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Overhead view of spiked cider punch for the holidays, with orange and apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and edible flowers.

The thing I love most about batch cocktails like this one that can be served in a punch bowl, other than the fact that I get to break my rarely used (very pretty) punch bowl, is that guests can serve themselves.

If you’re hosting a holiday party or having a few guests over for something more low key, you know how nice it is to have something ANYTHING checked off your list of things to do. And because guests can serve themselves AND feel more inclined to help restock when the punch bowl runs low (bc it’s easy to spot), this spiked cider recipe has a special place in my holiday (entertaining) heart.

It could also be a great option to bring / make for a holiday potluck once all the food has been covered. And I promise the host will love that someone thought to bring a spiked punch to the party. Though you may want to check ahead of time, just in case.

Did I mention you can also serve this holiday cocktail hot OR cold?!

Apple cider cocktails with cinnamon sticks and apple slices

So, if you want make your own spiked cider this holiday season, I’ve included all the ingredients and instructions below. Scroll to the bottom of this post for the printer friendly version of this recipe.

Ingredients for Simple Cider Whiskey Punch

  • 4-6 cups of whiskey (depending on how strong you like your drinks)
  • 6 cups of apple cider (steer clear of any apple juice from concentrate)
  • .5 cup of fresh lemon juice
  • .5 cup of water (if you skip on using ice, double this amount)
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 1.5 tsp nutmeg
  • cinnamon sticks, apple slices, orange rounds, and edible flowers* (all optional to float on top)

How to Make Spiked Cider Whiskey Punch

Combine whiskey, apple cider, lemon juice, and water. Sprinkle in cinnamon and nutmeg. Then stir. Pour over ice and add cinnamon sticks, apple slices, and orange rounds for top floaters.

*Extra tip – If it’s an especially blistering winter evening, try making this recipe over the stove in a big pot for a warm drink everyone can sip on. Hold the cinnamon sticks, and add them in as you serve as a little garnish.

DIY Christmas Ornaments to Get your Tree Through the Holidays in Style

DIY Christmas ornaments are one of my favorite things to make each year around the holidays.

The Ultimate Guide to DIY Christmas Ornaments - featuring paper globe ornaments

The fact that you can completely switch up the look of your tree (or give an amazing homemade ornaments gift to friends and family) is basically music to my ears, as cheesy as that might sound.

But let me back up a little bit and explain… Ornaments are a source of family tradition for me (and many others I’m sure). When I was growing up, we would decorate the tree as a family every year…eventually I think it just became my mom and I doing the tree decorating, but still I loved it.

We always had crazy weird homemade ornaments to throw on the tree – some got prominent spots in the front, while others quickly made their way to the much-forgotten back of the tree. Haha.

But no matter where they were places, those DIY Christmas ornaments we had were an instant memory when they were taken out of the Christmas decoration box every year. So, the placement didn’t matter all that much. It was the memory that seemed significant.

That may feel a little deep for a DIY ornaments guide and I kind of agree with you, BUT it’s true! Those homemade ornaments are just kind of the best! Which is exactly why I wanted to put together the ultimate guide of DIY Christmas ornaments for you!

So, pull up a chair and maybe a pair of scissors, here are my absolute favorite homemade ornaments to make (with links to how to make them) AND a few reason why you should even care about making these holiday creations in the first place.

Colorful paper ornaments shaped like geometric totems

To make or not to make homemade ornaments?

Still not convinced that the homemade ornament route is the way to go? Here’s why I think otherwise:

First, it’s a family activity – Now that we’ve got a kid in the mix, I can see this being such a fun family tradition to make a huge batch of ornaments together OR maybe make the same kinds of ornaments every year to keep filling our tree up.

Hayes’s hands are a little too small for big projects like this, but if you’ve got older kids, I can see it being a lot of fun to include them and create new traditions.

Secondly, it’s unique and custom – Your tree lives in your house for a month. Why not make it custom to your space? Utilize the color scheme of your space and make it festive with a run of homemade ornaments. Might as well make your holiday decor match your everyday decor!

Last but not least, they make great gifts wrap toppers – Don’t have room on your tree for anymore ornaments? Gift them! Replace the bows in your gift wrapping kit for ornaments for an extra personal wrapping.

Still not convinced? Well maybe one of these ideas might entice you.

Types of DIY Christmas Ornaments

Over the years, I feel like I’ve tried it all when it comes to holiday DIY projects, so I know a few things about a handmade holiday. After years of experimenting and decorating my own tree, here are the different types of ornaments I’ve been able to make:

  • paper ornaments
  • clay ornaments
  • glass ornaments (technically these were only embellished – I didn’t make the glass)
  • fabric ornaments

Clay rainbow ornaments stacked on top of each other with natural twine

DIY Clay Ornaments

Clay is one of my favorite DIY materials, so of course I had to use it to make a few clay ornaments for the Christmas tree. It’s really an easy material to work with and the end results are so professional.

Clay ornaments make awesome holiday gifts for friends and family. And with just one $10 package of clay, you can make as many as 30 ornaments. Depending on the size of each ornament. If they’re really small and rolled out thinly, you could make even more than that with one package of clay.

There are lots of different brands of air dry clay that you can use for craft projects, like homemade ornaments. Personally, I like the brand DAS because it’s really affordable and easy to use.

Plus, you can buy it on Amazon. This is the terra cotta air dry clay I use and there is a great white clay option too.

What kinds of clay ornaments can you make?

These terracotta clay ornaments (above) are made of that same clay I recommended above, along with nail polish, and my trusty rainbow shaped cookie cutter. I also made a bunch of other shapes using this same method, which were a little smaller and perfect for gifting.

You can see all the clay ornaments I made on this post: DIY clay ornaments.

Another clay you can use to create ornaments is polymer clay. It’s another affordable option and available;able in a wide range of colors. Polymer clays can be cured or hardened in the oven, making this type of clay another easy option for even the most beginner DIYer.

There are so many things you can do with polymer clay and I put together several polymer clay techniques — that you can use to make ornaments, jewelry, etc.

Colorful glass ornaments with hand drawn faces on each one

DIY Glass Ornaments

The most timeless and popular ornament is the glass ball ornament. I see these everywhere, year after year. I guess there’s just something about that classic look that so many people are drawn too. And honestly, I like it too.

BUT if you want to go beyond the classic look of a glass ball ornament, there are plenty of DIYable options.

These DIY line drawing glass ornaments are technically made from clear plastic not glass, but they look just like glass balls without the hassle. They’re shatterproof and easier to handle / not so delicate. All you need to make these face ornaments — is a little paint and a permanent marker or paint pen.

Feeling inspired? Use those same materials and try this quick ornament idea. Honestly, there are so many ways to paint your glass ornaments – from doodles and simple line drawings, to painterly patterns and even custom monograms.

Check out my pattern ornaments post for some more DIY glass ornament ideas.

Paper ornaments in a ball shape with painted surfaces in warm colors

DIY Paper Ornaments

Paper ornaments are the easiest and least expensive to make. Most of us have at least a small stack of paper in the house that would work for a paper ornament project – whether it be printer paper, recycled magazines, paper grocery bags, or even junk mail.

And if you want to make something a little thicker, you can try scrap cardboard or even an old cereal box. There are lots of budget-friendly and/or free possibilities for DIY paper ornaments.

So what kinds of DIY paper ornaments can you make? Here’s some inspiration…

These painted totem ornaments are made of a thick  yardstick paper, but if you don’t have cardstock, you can use any thickness of paper (and double up if necessary). This paper ornament idea would also work with junk mail (use the envelope), cereal boxes, and more.

Another paper ornament idea that I love is 3D balls. They’re so festive, especially when you have a large set to cover the entire tree. And you can customize these paper ball ornaments in so many different ways.

Paint the paper like I did for an artsy look. Keep all the pieces of paper the same color for a solid color ornament. Use different colors of paper for a technicolor ball or use scrap paper from magazines, wrapping paper, or greeting cards to create a unique set of pattern ball ornaments.

Last but not least on the paper ornament front are these 3D star ornaments. I made mine out of chipboard, BUT they really don’t need to be that thick.

Which means cereal boxes would be a great option to use for this one. Cut up the box, so it lays flat as one piece, then paint one side, let it dry, and cut out the star shapes to piece it together.

Star ornaments hanging off of Christmas garland on staircase

DIY Fabric Ornaments

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got drawers and drawers full of scrap fabric. It never ends, does it? So why not use the scraps that are lying around to make unique, one-of-a-kind ornaments made of fabric?

Christmas ornaments are the perfect use for scrap pieces of fabric since they’re usually pretty small. You can almost always use pieces of fabric you wouldn’t otherwise be able to reuse, based on the size alone.

Take these DIY star and moon ornaments (above) for example. It’s just 2 pieces of fabric cut and sewn together in the star or moon shape.

I even created a template for each shape, to make it easy. So all you have to do is print, cut, stuff, and sew. Head over to my fabric ornaments DIY for the free template and tutorial.

Not into the celestial ornament idea? No worries. What about something for color-lovers? Maybe in the velvet department?! These color blocked DIY velvet ornaments are cute and bring a lot of color to your tree.

Plus, the soft velvet is a nice contrast to those spikes Christmas tree branches.

Would you consider leather a fabric? It’s certainly in the textile category? So it seems like fair game to me. These DIY statement tassels would be awesome ornaments with just a couple of modifications.

Mainly just scaling down the size. What do you think? They’re made from leather and wood, so it would certainly be an unexpected ornament option. AND they double as the perfect gift topper.

Modern DIY ornaments for the holidays

Even More Homemade Ornament Ideas

Just for fun, I’ve rounded up some additional DIY ornaments from around the web (and from me as well) to get you excited about making your own holiday decor / Christmas ornaments.

DIY wood garland wrapped around a Christmas tree

What About a Holiday Garland?

If you’re in the DIY groove, keep the momentum going with more holiday tree decorating DIYs. Holiday garlands are another great craft project for the Christmas tree and I have a handful of DIY ideas that might spark your interest, just in case.

Like the Oversized Wood Block Garland DIY in the photo above. I love the pops of color and the modern shapes that give a little twist on a traditional idea. It may be difficult to tell from the photo, but these blocks are actually pretty good size too! Would make a great statement on any size tree…or draped across a fireplace mantle.

Or if you’re looking for something SUPER easy that won’t take much time to make, check out this knotted DIY rope garland. It can be made with any thick rope and requires no crafting skills whatsoever.

Want some sparkle? This holographic garland DIY is just what you need. I originally made this garland for a New Years Eve photo backdrop, but I think it would look really nice wrapped around a tree. Especially with some lights reflecting off of it. So shiny! AND you can reuse it after the holidays for a New Year’s Eve celebration.

DIY clay ornaments in various pastel colors and shapes

So there you have it. Quite a lot to digest, but if you love a homemade holiday as much as I do, then you’re in the right place.

Do you like decorating your tree with DIY ornaments? Or is it mostly purchased ornaments? OR a mixture of both?!

Gifting Audible Is Awesome

Ok, a little background about me; I grew up as a book worm. My head was always buried in a book. When Kindles came out, I was a purist. Then I came to realise a few things; I don’t need to possess a physical book to get all of the benefits.

Decluttering is the name of my game now but I’m super busy! I still want to consume books but I don’t want the physical book. There’s also no time to read, so being able to listen to books while I do other things is the best thing ever.

Now, I do hear some say “you can make time to read”. Sure, but that time is something I dedicate to journaling, which is far more important to my mental health. I’m able to enjoy my favourite authors, get motivated to continue building this empire and still spend quality time with my family.

Cleaning, How To Clean Your Home In Half The Time

Cleaning, how to do it well and quickly is a question that is searched for frequently on Google. It seems as if we look at all of these cleaning hacks online and immediately forget them. That’s why I’m here today to share how you can clean your house 2x faster than ever before, if not 10x as fast!

Grab your all-purpose cleaner, a microfiber cloth and your gloves. If you prefer natural cleaning solutions, then grab the baking soda and white vinegar (it’s great if you want to clean glass).

A house cleaning schedule is your first step! You will clean your house and save time in the process. In an almost effortless way of keeping your home clean.

There is a lot of information on the web to help you clean your house faster than ever before; heck you can find lots right here on the bog. My first job was as a Cleaner in a theatre and I worked there for years.

In that time, I picked up some essential hacks to ensure I cleaned everything I was supposed to, in a tight time frame. Review all of the information in this guide and decide which plan works best for you.

Cleaning, How To Clean Your Home In Half The Time

We’ve got some rather epic cleaning tips that will help you get done in record time. I was a professional and I learned how to not waste any time, because if I didn’t clean what I was meant to clean there would be complaints from the public. Thankfully, it never happened!

When it comes to house cleaning, an all-purpose cleaner, microfiber cloth and schedule is an excellent start!

Using a planner

The first step is to decide on the planner system you will use. This is my personal favourite, by Paper Oats. Print out a few copies and begin with the most difficult and complex cleaning job, then you can include smaller jobs. This way, when you run out of steam, there are only small jobs to do.

Group Your Cleaning Tasks

You can group your tasks into categories like washing, wiping or dusting. It’s rather similar to task batching for work. Concentrate on one thing, go through the house and wipe what needs to be wiped. Then go through and vacuum etc. Sticking to a schedule is a guaranteed way to stay on top of these tasks.

Of course, you can keep your schedule flexible but you will be able to move things around. Sticking to the outline of the schedule is where you will find success. Not necessarily performing tasks at a certain time each day or week.

How To Do Your Cleaning The Right Way

Motivation is key! This is where you need to go and sign up to Amazon music and stream all of your songs without ads while you buzz around and clean the house.

Obviously, music isn’t the only motivation. You could motivate yourself with an extra date night. The key to getting it done fast is FOCUS. Don’t take a break to check your texts, the time wasted between switching tasks is exactly that; WASTED.

Start from the top and work your way down. Dust the ceiling, clean your walls first and work your way to the coffee table, carpets and flooring.

Safety Tips

Wear comfortable clothing, but nothing that could catch or get caught. If you use bleach, make sure your clothing is protected. If you’re going to be on your knees a lot, use a cushion to protect them or buy some knee pads.

Always wear gloves to protect your skin from harsh chemicals or even too much warm water.

Now, the question is: ‘how people manage to do the cleaning?’ “How to keep space uncluttered when there is a lot to do?”

If you are at your wit’s end with clutter, here are some of the best ways to keep your home clean, with special thanks to Heba Noureldine from Cleaning Company Dubai, a renowned home cleaning expert.

Decluttering boxes

Pick up the clutter

Put everything in its place. Don’t just shift items from table to table. It will be a never-ending loop of rubbish! This is something very much needed. We all people just pick the stuff up but never put it back on its place. It’s the main reason why people feel like their houses are always messy and cluttered. It is essential to put things back where they belong.

Recommended Resource: Get Organized, Get Happy [Expert Guide]

See, if you will put the things back on their places, then there would be no mess gathered at a single place, and consequently, you will face less mess. So if you are picking up one stuff, and then moving for the other one, without putting back the first one on place, then you are bounding yourself up to an endless mess.

In simple words, put your stuff away!

Set A Dedicated Space For Your Belongings

Mess only created when things are not put back on their places, but for putting back them, there must be some specifically designated space for everything where they can live in your house. Otherwise, it is useless to declutter your home, because cleaning is not going to work without specifying a location for each stuff.

If you have books, then there must be bookshelf space in your home, similarly, for toys, there must be a toy bucket or cupboard where you can organize all playing stuff. This is one of the most ignored factors while thinking of decluttering the mess around your home.

“Edit” Your Belongings:

Okay, so often people get confused at how to organize and keep the spaces clean that is filled with lots of stuff, they actually don’t need or want. It’s normal for anyone to get stymied when there is a lot to handle. Make it clear that mess is not the actual problem, but not to address this problem is what makes the task much challenging.

The solution is, the less you own, the less you actually have to manage, and so there would be less mess for sure. So if you are prone to being messy, then it is important to edit your belongings, and add what you really need.

In rather simple words, only possess those stuff which you actually need, and don’t overload your home with unnecessary stuff

Be Diligent

Persistence and consistency is everything, especially when it comes to tidying. There is no magical shortcut to declutter your space unless you put your efforts to put everything away. You need to be a seriously devoted housekeeper.

But that doesn’t mean you need to spend your all day doing it, no you don’t need to spend your whole day. Instead, you need to take a couple of extra minutes to do this. Set a particular part of a day to clean out your space, and reach your milestone. Once the time is over, you don’t need to overdo anything.

Reframe Your perception

You may find this way a bit hardest among all. But self-motivation begins with your mindset. You really need to be intentional to edit your space and wholly its contents. By doing so, you gain a firm grasp of what exactly you own, and why! This matters a lot.

Of course, you consider your home as your sanctuary, and you see everything inside it as there a specific purpose for you or else be just released.

This way, you actually gain a sense of respect for your all valued belongings, and treat them well, so that they can continue serving you the way they are already doing. It further ensures you an environment which is not only decluttered and peaceful but promotes your wellbeing

For that, you may have to reframe your view regarding the stuff you have. It has been lifechanging for me. So in the end, take care of your home, keep it hygienic and somewhere to relax.

Cool DIY Xmas Tree Skirt Ideas (Two Ways) Using a Drop Cloth

Not one but two Xmas tree skirt ideas to share today!

Pink dyed Xmas tree skirt with tassels

The first is a modern take on a traditional tree skirt. Complete with tassels and hand dyed canvas that is actually made from a store-bought $10 drop cloth.

And the second (also made from an inexpensive drop cloth) is a patchwork tree skirt inspired by mudcloth.

Wanna see how these Christmas tree decorations turned out? Click through for a step by step tutorial for each DIY tree skirt.

Pink DIY tree skirt with simple ornaments and a Scandinavian style Christmas tree

Materials for Dyed Drop Cloth Tassel Tree Skirt

This dyed canvas tree skirt is made from a $10 dropcloth and a few yards of ribbon tassel, making this Xmas project super affordable (and easy). Plus, look at that pretty pink color.

*I bought my drop cloth locally, so it was under $10. But I linked to a similar one on Amazon (that is a few dollars more) in case you aren’t able to make it to a home improvement store to pick one up.

**Keep in mind that whatever dye you choose will ultimately create a slightly more muted version of the color shown on the bottle because of the natural canvas material being dyed.

How to Make a (Dyed Tassel) Tree Skirt

Prepping Your Drop Cloth

Start by throwing the drop cloth into the washing machine. Wash with the hottest water and a little bit of detergent to wash away any of the coating the drop cloth has on it. And then throw it in the dryer to pre-shrink your material.

Making a tree skirt form a drop cloth

Cutting out a Tree Skirt

Once your drop cloth is washed and dried, cut out a square that is 45 inches on every side (or larger if you’re opting for a larger tree skirt). Just make sure whatever size you make your tree skirt, it is the same measurement on every side, forming a square.

To cut your skirt into a circle, fold the square you just cut into 4ths (in half one way, then half another way). Divide whatever measurement you made in the previous step by 2.

In my case that number is 22.5 inches. So, I measured 22.5 inches down from the tip of the interior corner (the corner where there are no outside edges of fabric) and made a mark with tailors chalk.

Then moved the measuring tape over 3 inches (while the top of the measuring tape is still at the interior corner tip) and made another mark. Repeat every 3 inches until the outline of the rounded curve is marked out

Then, cut along that curved line that was created.

To cut out the center circle for your tree stump, measure 3 inches from the interior corner tip on each side and then in the middle and mark with tailors chalk again, Then cut along that rounded line that’s been created, forming a circle.

Now that your skirt is cut into a skirt shape, cut a line from the center to the edge to be able to wrap your skirt around the base of your tree. Set that piece aside.

Sewing a tree skirt made of drop cloth canvas

Sewing a Tree Skirt

Now, cut 3 long strips of drop cloth that are both 4′ long and 3 inches wide. Sew them together long ways so you have one strip of fabric that is approx. 12′ long. Starting on one side of the slit in the circle, sew the strip and the edge of the skirt together.

Once you’ve sewn the strip all the way around the base of the tree skirt, heat up your iron and grab your ironing board to press the the hems. You’ll want to fold the strip inward so that there are no raw hems shown. Press the fold all the way around, then pop back onto your sewing machine and sew the hem about 1/4″ from the edge.

Sewn tree skirt with tree hole and slit

Do the same thing with the hem of the circle that’ll wrap around your tree stump. With that, you’ll want to cut a strip that’s about 20″ long and 3″ wide.

Sew that strip together with the strip laying on top of the top of the skirt. Repeat the same process of folding and pressing the hem. Sew that hem 1/4″ from the edge.

Now, go back to your ironing board and press both of the slit edges about 1/2″ underneath the skirt. Sew them both.

Dying simple canvas tree skirt with pink dye in a stainless steel sink

Dyeing a Tree Skirt

Now it’s time to prep your dye bath. I did mine in the kitchen sink. Ours is stainless steel, so I didn’t really worry about it getting dyed on accident. If you don’t have a stainless steel sink, you can also do this in a large bucket like the ones they sell at hardware stores.

*Instructions may vary slightly based on the type of dye you are using, so be sure to follow the instructions on your bottle or box dye. But I’ve included what I do just in case.

Fill your sink or bucket up with enough HOT water to completely submerge your completed tree skirt. And when I say hot, make sure its the hottest water you can use. Without your skirt in the water, pour in a tbs of table salt and stir to dissolve.

Now, pour about 1/4 of the dye into the water. Fully submerge your skirt into the dye bath and stir it with a spoon (make sure not to use a wooden one or it will soak up the dye).

Rinsing excess dye out of canvas DIY tree skirt

After about 5 minutes, you can remove your skirt and drain the water. Rinse your skirt and get as much of the dye out. The water should run mostly clear after you give it a good rinse.

Throw it into the wash for a quick wash with a small splash of soap. Then dry it. It’ll come out pretty wrinkled so you’ll want to iron it before applying the tassel trim.

Sewing small tassels onto pink homemade tree skirt

Sewing Tassel Trim to Tree Skirt

After ironing the skirt nice and flat, take it back to the sewing machine for the final step – applying the tassel trim. Pin your trim along the underside of the skirt all along the base.

Make sure your machine is loaded up with the thread that matches the dyed skirt so that you can’t see it after you sew.

Sew the trim all the way around making sure the back stitch at the start and end. Trim you thread, and you’re all set!

Hand painted DIY mud cloth tree skirt idea for Christmas
And if that dyed tree skirt DIY isn’t quite your thing, how about this patchwork mud cloth version instead?

It’s also made of affordable drop cloth and is actually a little cheaper to make than the first tree skirt because the only major supplies you need outside of the drop cloth is paint and paint brush, which you probably already have at home.

Wanna make this mud cloth inspired tree skirt? Here’s what you’ll need to make your own…

Materials to Make Drop Cloth Patchwork Tree Skirt

  • large drop cloth
  • thread that closely matches canvas
  • sewing machine
  • white paint (or really any color of your choosing)
  • fabric scissors
  • tailors chalk
  • measuring tape
  • *optional* seam ripper

How to Make a (Patchwork) Tree Skirt

Cut and paint patches

Start by cutting a square that is 48″ on each side. You can make yours larger if you want a bigger tree skirt. This size is slightly more toward the smaller size in terms of tree skirts.

The average tree skirt is anywhere between 48 and 56 inches. So keep that in mind when cutting the initial dimensions for yours. Generally, the rule for tree skirts is bigger the tree, the bigger the tree skirt.

Painting canvas squares and rectangles to create patchwork mud cloth tree skirt

You may have to seam rip the edges if your drop cloth is hemmed around the edge. OR just cut the hem part off – up to you. Now, cut that square piece into as many patches you’d like in varying sizes.

It’s helpful to keep the square shape in tact even as you are cutting the pieces up so you know how they’re all fit back together when sewing. It might even be helpful to take a picture of the placement of all the patchwork pieces so you can reference it if things get mixed up later in the process of tree skirt making.

All painted pieces on the floor and arranged and ready for tree skirt cutting

Next, start painting different patterns on each of the pieces. You can do simple patterns like polka dots and stripes, dashes, plus signs, etc.

If you need pattern inspiration, try pulling up mudcloth fabric patterns online. You’ll find some really good ones to mimic that way.

Once dry, make sure the painted pieces are arranged in a square once again and take a photo to reference later if needed.

Sewing patchwork pieces together on sewing machine

Sew patches together

Next, start sewing the pieces together based on the image you captured. Sew each piece about 1/4″ away from the edge.

Once all your pieces are assembled, cut your tree skirt into a circle.

Cutting hole into tree skirt with scissors and measuring tape

Fold your square piece into 4ths (in half one way, then half another way). Measure 22.5″ from the center of the square every 3 inches or so and mark with tailors chalk. Once the outline of the rounded curve is marked out, cut along the line.

To cut out the center circle for your tree stump, measure 3″ from the center and repeat the same process above.

Cutting slit into mud cloth DIY tree skirt

Sew your tree skirt

Now, cut 3 long strips of drop cloth that are both 4′ long and 3 inches wide. Sew them together long ways so you have one strip of fabric that is approx. 12′ long. Starting on one side of the slit in the circle, sew the strip and the edge of the skirt together.

Sewing patchwork mud cloth tree skirt on sewing machine

Once you’ve sewn the strip all the way around the base of the tree skirt, heat up your iron and grab your ironing board to press the the hems. You’ll want to fold the strip inward so that there are no raw hems shown.

Press the fold all the way around, then pop back onto your sewing machine and sew the hem about 1/4″ from the edge.

Now, go back to your ironing board and press both of the slit edges about 1/2″ underneath the skirt. Sew them both. Trim you thread, and you’re all set!

DIY Tree Skirt FAQ

What is the average size Christmas tree skirt?

Typically, the average size of an Xmas tree skirt is 48-56 inches. Both of the DIY tree skirts I shared today are one the small end of the tree skirt spectrum. So keep that in mind when making your own.

If you have a small to medium size tree, a 48 inch tree skirt is a great size. But with a larger tree, you may want something a little bigger. Which means your measurements when making one of these tree skirts would need to be a little bigger than the dimensions I shared.

Type of drop cloth that works best for making a holiday tree skirt

Look for the highest quality canvas you can find when searching for a drop cloth that will work for DIY projects like this one. Usually that means opting for the heavyweight drop cloth (assuming your sewing machine can handle the slightly thicker material).

Typically with drop cloths though, you’ll find the canvas is a lower grade (it is a drop cloth after all), so look at the texture and quality of the drop cloth when choosing one for this project to make sure you’re getting the best option.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re only making one tree skirt, which is probably the most likely scenario, you can get away with a much smaller drop cloth size. So, you can up the quality and go down in size and still find a really good option.

Can I use regular canvas instead of a drop cloth?

Yes! You absolutely can use regular canvas instead, for both DIY tree skirts I’m sharing today. And if this is a tree skirt you plan to use year after year, buying canvas by the yard at an art supply store instead of a drop cloth from a home improvement store might be the best option.

It will cost a little bit more, which is why I like the drop cloth idea as a great affordable alternative. But if you have a few extra dollars to throw at this project, canvas by the yard is generally a higher quality material to use. And it’s still affordable – it just costs a little more than the drop cloth would.

  • If you need pattern inspiration, try pulling up mudcloth fabric patterns online. You’ll find some really good ones to mimic that way.

  • Once dry, make sure the painted pieces are arranged in a square once again and take a photo to reference later if needed.

Sew patches together

  • Next, start sewing the pieces together based on the image you captured. Sew each piece about 1/4″ away from the edge.

  • Once all your pieces are assembled, cut your tree skirt into a circle.

  • Fold your square piece into 4ths (in half one way, then half another way). Measure 22.5″ from the center of the square every 3 inches or so and mark with tailors chalk. Once the outline of the rounded curve is marked out, cut along the line.

  • To cut out the center circle for your tree stump, measure 3″ from the center and repeat the same process above.

Sew your tree skirt

  • Now, cut 3 long strips of drop cloth that are both 4′ long and 3 inches wide. Sew them together long ways so you have one strip of fabric that is approx. 12′ long. Starting on one side of the slit in the circle, sew the strip and the edge of the skirt together.

  • Once you’ve sewn the strip all the way around the base of the tree skirt, heat up your iron and grab your ironing board to press the the hems. You’ll want to fold the strip inward so that there are no raw hems shown.

  • Press the fold all the way around, then pop back onto your sewing machine and sew the hem about 1/4″ from the edge.

  • Do the same thing with the hem of the circle that’ll wrap around your tree stump. With that, you’ll want to cut a strip that’s about 20″ long and 3″ wide. Sew that strip together with the strip laying on top of the top of the skirt.

  • Repeat the same process of folding and pressing the hem. Sew that hem 1/4″ from the edge.

  • Now, go back to your ironing board and press both of the slit edges about 1/2″ underneath the skirt. Sew them both. Trim you thread, and you’re all set!

Humans are meant to have biphasic sleep, which means that we should sleep twice in a 24 hour period.

A power nap of about 30 minutes during the day will boost your energy levels and make you feel alert.

Along with this, you should try to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep a day as this will help you in many ways including having a stronger memory.

You should also treat yourself to at least one extra hour of sleep on the weekends! To help you sleep, power down two hours before bed and dim or turn off bright lights. Essential oils can also help you have a restful night

This is because it releases happy hormones or “endorphins”.

Of course, the styles you have in your home speaks volumes about you personally and your tastes. Today, it is available in an enormous variety of styles and it’s so cheap. However, there’s a real price to pay that not many people consider. It saves you money but destroys something else in the process.

So, how do you determine what is the right kind of deal for you? Well, the right kind is obviously one that fits into your budget, solves your issue and looks great.

There are so many different styles available for you to buy, it’s almost overwhelming. So in this guide, I want you to go through and find out exactly what criteria a piece must meet for it to be worth your hard-earned cash.

Want Discount Furniture? This Is What You Need To Know Before You Buy

Buying new furniture is an investment not just for your home, but also for your quality of life. You want to create a place where you can de-stress and escape from the rest of the world, your personal sanctuary that reflects your tastes and looks great. Here are a few things to consider when choosing real quality pieces.

Discount Furniture, The Real Price To The Environment

It is very important that your furniture meets indoor environmental pollution standards. There are certain finishes and stains that emit VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) that contribute to the majority of indoor air pollution. Eco-friendly versions exist and it includes powder-based finishes. The great things about them is that require less energy to manufacture, create less waste and free of VOC’s

The real cost of cheap products is to the environment.

Discount Furniture, What’s The Solution For Buying Quality Furniture?

Buying quality furniture is a real investment for your home. Shopping for it online does not have to be difficult. Simply search for quality furniture and still find deals.

Example; you could buy a piece of furniture from the Original Scrapbox Company. It’s so well made that my husband didn’t swear once when building it (downing a bottle of vino in the process and having a right old time!). You can save $100 off your purchase using coupon code HHMUK100.

They offer a pre-built service and the customer service is second to none. The craft cabinet that I purchased has 1400 5 star reviews! Those are some high-quality products and put the cheap stuff to shame.

Buying Quality Furniture And Saving Money In The Long Run

There are many payment options available with the majority of stores online. It’s possible to take part in a payment program, through buy now pay later catalogues where you can pay weekly or monthly.

Ultimately, the furniture you choose must be durable and easy to maintain. You don’t want to buy furniture made from a material that breaks down right after purchase, or if it costs you the earth just to keep it clean and presentable.

Furniture Deals | Construction

A good piece of furniture that will look great for years will feel heavy and solid. If you invest in solid wood frames instead of cheaper veneers, particle board or aluminium, your pieces will be more durable in the long run. Open drawers and doors to see how well they are put together and how smoothly they operate.

Check the thickness and construction of sofa cushions. Even the way wood is joined can tell you about the quality of a piece. Wood that is glued or nailed down at corners is more common than cheaper furniture, whereas you can see the woodworking joints on better pieces.

Silhouette

Invest in classic looks if you want quality products that can stand the test of time. Solid wood dining room furniture is a great idea but it can be quite bulky. Of course, classic styles doesn’t mean that you have to choose a boring design; you may still want something very contemporary. But before you buy, look through furniture stores and magazines to get a feel for your personal style. Knowing your style can guide you in finding a look that you’ll love. Just keep in mind that you want something you can see yourself loving for a long time.

Still Want Furniture For Cheap? Check The Finish

Does it look cheap? For wooden furniture, the stain of the wood can dramatically affect the look of the room. Do you want a light airy feel, a darker formal design, or the white painted look of a beach house? If the room has a wood floor, its finish will probably influence the furniture pieces you choose.

Wood tones don’t have to match precisely as you can achieve an interesting look by pairing pieces that are similar but not an exact match together. And the good news is that you can adapt your pieces as trends and your tastes change by refinishing older furniture.

Cheap Furnitures Don’t Have Quality Fabric

As with finish, the fabrics you choose can change the look of any room. Darker colours and conservative prints can make a room look more formal, or you can decorate with bright colours to add some pop. Your bedroom should have pale shades to encourage relaxation. For items that are used heavily, such as sofa cushions, dark colours tend to wear better over time. Look for removable covers that you can wash easily.

Sticking to neutral colours for your more expensive pieces is a smart investment, as you will tend to have these pieces longer. You don’t want to end up with something you love right now but won’t be able to stand in a year or two.

Searching for the perfect piece can feel daunting and the variety of choices seems endless. But with a little advance research and a good idea of your personal style, you’ll be able to feel confident that you’re choosing quality pieces that you’ll still love and that will still look great in many years from now.

STILL, Want To Buy Cheap Furniture?

If you’ve filled your cart with the cheap bookcase of your choice, you’ve done a quick search, found something that meets your price and you still want to go and buy it after this, I obviously can’t stop you. However, those pieces always look cheap and don’t usually last very long. Now that I’ve owned expensive furniture, I am doing everything in my power to take great care of it so it lasts even longer.

As another example, my parents own a piece that was built in the early 1900s. That’s what I’m talking about when I say QUALITY!

Do some basic research about the products you find. Check online reviews, research the company you’re buying from before checking out. Look at the experience each customer had purchasing from said business and what they had to say about the stock on offer, the delivery process and the business in general.

Please Note

Being on a budget does not actually mean that you are limited to super cheap furniture. If you want a well-presented home, consider the more expensive products and make a real plan to deal with the financial aspect. However, if you really can not afford to buy the quality stuff, please ignore me. Do not get yourself into debt you cannot afford to repay.
